Cushion Cannons

General Points

The key to cushion cannons is to contact the white correctly. The shot varies from position to position and you will need to use check, running or no side to make the shot. You can judge whether you have played the shot accurately if the white returns to a good position to continue floating white.

A medium pace is used and it is important to leave a pot on. You will probably find it quite difficult at first to get the right amount of momentum into the red and white.

Standard shot

The objective is to hit the white at the correct contact to nudge it back into position. The shot varies from position to position and in this case a touch of check side is needed to nudge the white back to the ideal position. With different positions you will find that either no side is required or perhaps some running side. You can judge whether you have played the shot accurately if the white returns to a good position to continue floating white.

Cannon to nudge the white up to the line

Play this shot harder than you would think to get the white on a line almost level with the spot. This makes the cannon from white to red (that you will play after the pot red) easy to position for.

Practice Targets

Beginner 1/10

Success rate for the standard shot should be measured on how you contacted the white and it's final position. You will find this tricky at first.

Club Player 2/10

An average player will struggle at this shot. Although it is easy to make the cannon, getting the white to a good position is not easy.

Professional 9/10

Top players are able to repeat this shot time after time.

Remember

  • Hit the white at the correct contact to nudge it back to a good position
  • Use side as required to make the shot
  • Make sure that you leave a pot on

Common Mistakes

  • Just making the cannon and not concentrating enough on position
