Are the players of yesteryear far superior to those of the last 30-40 years? (ex. Tom Newman, Joe Davis, Walter Lindrum etc.)

This may not be the right section for this question, but I figured if anyone would know it would be the resident experts.

I've been wondering this for some time, I've read quite a bit about the players of the 20's and 30's and the top class players all seemed to make 1000's on a regular basis. Are they that much better? Or has the change in equipment made the game more difficult? Or are there more scoring restrictions than there were in the late 20's and 30's?

Thanks for any insight.
