Pots Avoiding The Cushion

General Points

If you have the choice of playing the pot with stun and avoiding the cushion, then it is normally best to take it. In general, your position will be much more certain when playing direct.

Pot to leave another pot

Play this pot to leave a nice angle for another pot. Do not try to be too clever and get too close to the red as it is better to be further away and sure of the position.

Stun pot

This shot hardly needs any explanation; suffice to say that you can keep the cue ball very close to the other two balls by stunning the pot.

Running side pot

By playing with running side you can effectively straighten the potting angle here, which allows you to keep the cue ball closer to the red for the next cannon.

Screw pot

Here you have a choice of either using the cushion or screwing back for the cannon. It is normally better to avoid cushions if you have the choice. In this case there is such a large margin for error that either shot would work.

Pot to leave a recovery cannon

Concentrate on leaving a simple recovery cannon. It is better to leave the angle slightly wide than narrow because then the cannon can be easily made off the right side of the white, to glance off the white without any risk of a cover.

Pot to leave a delicate cannon

Although there is the possibility of forcing the potting angle and stunning off the cushion, there is a much better option here. A gentle stun pot will leave an easy cannon from white to red. When you play this pot make sure that you play the cannon afterwards, to make sure that you can continue the break.
